Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic for Human Rights and National Minorities Rudolf Chmel held a press conference on evaluating his first 100 days in office
Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic for Human Rights and National Minorities Rudolf Chmel held a press conference on evaluating his first 100 days in office on 18th of October 2010.
The main topic of the conference were the new responsibilities changed as of November, according to an amendment to the General Administration Act passed by parliament and also the recent activities concerning human and minority right issues.
Vice prime minister is convinced, that it is necessary to accept the multiethnic character of Slovakia. As long as the conception of nation state prevails, tolerance, peacefulness and prosperity will miss in the country-added.
Early in the next year should be prepared the draft Act on National Minority Languages at the latest, re-evaluating the requirement, set out in the country’s recent law, that a minority language can be used in public administrative dealings only when the minority´s share is at least 20 percent in the given municipality. According to vice prime minister, the threshold should be lowered to 10 percent. "Limit of ten percent would affect mostly the municipalities with Rusin and German minorities" argues Chmel. Concerning the Hedvig Malina´s case Deputy Prime Minister said he releases his statement on the issue after prosecutor general clears his position on this question. According to vice prime minister, it is the state’s failure if a seemingly trivial case is still being investigated after 4 years.
